Tooth extraction in Preston

A lot of people are genuinely terrified when going to see the dentist.

Most either associate the dentist office with a place of great pain or they have gone through a tooth extraction procedure in the past.

Although dental care is a medical field that puts great emphasis on prevention with appropriate brushing and flossing techniques, not everyone can escape from a situation gone bad:

when a tooth has to be extracted, pulled.

Even though your adult teeth were meant to be in your mouth for a lifetime, often damage and decay result in a situation when there is no alternative but to get rid of it. This can be for several reasons:
  • Your mouth is crowded i.e. there is a tooth that is too big and doesn't allow another permanent tooth to break through your gum. This is mainly done for orthodontic reasons.
  • Bad oral hygiene and dental neglect can lead to bacteria invading the centre of your tooth causing infection and a lot of pain. When dentists cannot save the tooth, despite any root canal treatments, then they will most likely recommend extracting the damaged tooth.
  • In connection with the above reason, should you be immunocompromised and struggle to fight against infections, the "weakest link" in your mouth could get infected and before it gets worse, your dentist may remove the offender before more serious complications arise
  • If you have any sort of gum disease, the supporting tissues around a specific tooth may get too weak. It may also be a good idea for tooth extraction so that the infected area could be treated before it spreads to the jawbone and causes much more severe complications.

A tooth extraction procedure starts with a consultation with your dentist.

For many people, this is a stressful procedure and your local dentist in Preston will no doubt try to put your mind at ease.

They will explain that a local anaesthetic will be administered so that you don't feel any pain.

You will feel pressure and be aware of what's happening.

This is the safest way to do the procedure, however, in the case of small children and people with learning disabilities general anaesthesia may also be on the table.

In the latter case, a hospital will carefully adjust your dosage as this has to be tailored to everyone.

Generally, the dentist will widen the socket of your tooth to help it come out more easily before applying any pressure on the tooth and once it has been extracted he or she may put in some stitches to help the healing process of the socket.

Because of the local anaesthetic, however, you shouldn't feel any pain and the only thing that can make this a bigger deal is your fear-induced anxiety.

It is understandable, but these medical professionals are here to help you in the most pain-free way possible so should you feel any, just let them know and they will change "tactics".

As always, exercise good oral care, ask your local dentist in Preston for teeth brushing and flossing techniques so you can avoid having a tooth pulled.
